Choices Mental Health Center emerged out of the need for specialized mental health services for victims of rape and incest. In response to these needs we have developed an intense short term focused treatment program comprising three cycles of 12-session counseling and psychotherapy. Patients may require one or more cycles of treatment.

In the United States:

  • 1.3 adult women are raped every minute
  • 78 women are raped every hour
  • 1871 women are raped every day
  • 56,916 women are raped every month
  • 683,000 women are raped every year
(Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center of the National Victim Center, 1992)

A survey of over 6,000 college students found that 42% of women students reported some form of sexual assault, including forcible sexual contact, attempted rape and completed rape.  (Koss and Harvey, 1991)

Twenty percent of adult women , 15 percent of college women, and 12 percent of adolescent girls have experienced sexual abuse and assault during their lives.  (Koss, 1988)

In our work we have found it useful to divide our patients into three categories depending on the interval between the assault and the time of treatment.

  • Acute Stage: The rape has just occurred and/or the incest has happened or been discovered recently.

  • Intermediate Stage: Delayed reaction. Months or years have passed since the sexual assault has taken place.

  • Chronic Stage: The sexual trauma has occurred in the distant past.

  • Symptom relief
  • Recovering the previous level of functions
  • Integration of the traumatic experience
