LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS

Place
Boulder, Colorado is a university city and research center located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains about 25 miles northwest of Denver, the capitol of the state of Colorado. A major geographical feature is the presence of the beautiful Flatirons mountains that rise up behind Boulder.

Climate
The climate of Boulder is generally mild, but some summer days can be quite warm, and Colorado winters can sometimes be challenging. If you are coming to us from far away (we get patients from all of North America, Europe, and South America), we can advise you on local weather conditions.

Transportation
Boulder is about a half-hour drive from downtown Denver, about one hour by car or taxi from Denver International Airport, about 1 1/2 hours from Cheyenne, and about the same driving time from Colorado Springs. If you come into Denver International Airport and do not chose to rent a car, we recommend you come to Boulder via a regularly scheduled ground transportation company found at DIA. If you are coming from a foreign country or do not wish to use public transportation, we will be happy to arrange for a private limousine service to meet you and bring you promptly to Boulder.

Lodging
Boulder has a wide variety of highly satisfactory lodging facilities ranging from inexpensive motels and cabins to luxurious bed-and-breakfast and first class hotels a few blocks from Dr. Hern's office. We can help you arrange for accommodations that suit your budget and taste.

Meals
Along with innumerable coffee and sandwich shops, Boulder has some of the finest ethnic and gourmet restaurants in the Rocky Mountain region.

The Town
The heart of Boulder, just up the hill from the downtown business area, is the University of Colorado, one of the great universities of the world. Starting at the University, there are many first-rate cultural activities in Boulder. The downtown Mall is a few blocks' stroll from Dr. Hern's office, and for those who are staying for a few days, the Boulder City Parks in nearby mountains are pleasant to visit in good weather.

Directions
Dr. Hern's office is located at 1130 Alpine Avenue, just across the street from Boulder Community Hospital near the corner of Broadway and Alpine. This intersection is bounded on the east side by a small shopping center. Downtown Boulder, with its shops and hotels, lies six blocks to the south.

To reach Boulder from downtown Denver, take I-25 north to U.S. 36 (the Boulder Turnpike) and head northwest for 20 miles. You will pass the suburb of Westminster and pass the towns of Broomfield and Louisville on the north side of U.S. 36. As you arrive in Boulder, U.S. 36 becomes the "Boulder Bypass" heading north; it is also 28th Street within Boulder. Some of the hotels to which we will refer you lie along this route.

To reach Boulder Abortion Clinic from 28th street (U.S. 36), turn west off 28th street (for flatlanders, that means that you head toward the mountains!) at any of the following streets: Arapahoe, Canyon, Pearl, or Valmont. The simplest thing is to follow 28th street north to Valmont - the 6th stoplight on 28th - and turn left. Following Valmont west, the street will become Balsam; 15 blocks after leaving 28th, you will arrive at the corner of Broadway and Balsam; Boulder Community Hospital will be on the southwest corner of the intersection. Turn left and go one block south to Alpine Avenue; turn right (toward the mountains). The third building on the south side of the street is Dr. Hern's office, Boulder Abortion Clinic. Park on the west side of the office and come in.

Coming by car from neighboring states
The major highways leading to Boulder are: From Utah - I-70 to US 6 then Colo. 93 or I-70 to I-25, North to US 36 to Boulder From Wyoming - I-25 to US 36 to Boulder or I-25 to Colo. 66 to Hover Road, south to Colo. 119 ("the 'Diagonal'") to Iris Street to Broadway, turn left at Broadway, south to Alpine From New Mexico - I-25 to US 36 to Boulder From Nebraska - I-80 to I-76 to I-25 to US 36 From Kansas - I-70 to I-270 to I-25 to US 36

Coming from DIA
If you are renting a car at DIA, the simplest thing to do is to follow Peņa Boulevard to I-70, bear right at I-25, and immediately take the turnoff to Boulder via U.S. 36.

Anti-abortion demonstrations
Although Dr. Hern and Boulder Abortion Clinic have been the frequent targets of anti-abortion demonstrations in the past because of Dr. Hern's leadership in this area, demonstrations have become quite infrequent. This could be because anti-abortion demonstrators have learned that Boulder is the most pro-choice community in the United States and that Dr. Hern is one of the stubbornest men around. It is not likely that you will encounter any anti-abortion activity at Boulder Abortion Clinic. But if you do, give us a call from a few blocks away and we will get you safely into the office without having to deal with the demonstrators.
