ABORTION
PROCEDURE:
On
the day of the procedure, patients should plan on being at
the facility anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. Several steps are
gone through that day.
- Patient
Registration: Intake
coordinators will guide you through your paperwork, which
involves informing us of your complete medical history,
allergies to medications, previous pregnancies, etc. You
will also be reading through your consent for the
procedure.
- Ultrasound:
An ultrasound is done to determine the pregnancy
gestation, or the length of your pregnancy.
- Lab
Work: A lab
technician will call you in to perform several necessary
lab tests. Your blood pressure, temperature, pulse,
height, and weight will be recorded. A blood sample is
drawn to determine your iron level and Rh factor. If your
Rh factor is negative, an injection called Rhogam will be
administered post-operatively.
- Payment:
Full payment is due on the day of the procedure. Please
bring the requested documents and insurance information
if needed. Money orders, Cashier Checks, and Credit cards
(Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) are
accepted. NO personal checks please.
- Counseling:
A health educator will meet with you to review paperwork
and consent forms, explain the procedure, answer any
questions, and make sure you are comfortable with your
decision. This is usually a one-on-one session.
- Procedure:
You will be given a light sedation called "Twilight
Anesthesia". This is given through an IV in your arm,
making you relaxed and sleepy for about 15 minutes. Your
cervix is opened using dilators, then suction curettage
is performed to empty the contents of the uterus.
- Recovery:
Following the procedure, you are transported to the
recovery room to rest for at least one hour. Your vital
signs will be monitored, then you are given something to
eat and drink once the nurse determines you are alert.
Before leaving, the staff will go over your medications,
then discharge you to the person giving you a ride home.
Since
you will be under anesthesia, you will not be able to drive
yourself home after the procedure. You will need to arrange
transportation home. On the day of the procedure, you will
probably feel tired from the anesthesia. You may also
experience light to heavy bleeding and some cramping for a
few days to two weeks following the procedure. You can
return to work, school, and normal activities the following
day. It is recommended you do not exercise, do any strenuous
activities, stand for more than 3-4 hours without a break,
or heavy lifting (over 15 pounds) for the next two weeks
following the procedure. You will need to return to our
center or see your own physician for a follow-up exam in 2-3
weeks to make sure you have healed properly and you do not
have an infection. We can also get you started on a birth
control method or discuss your options at that
time.
PAYMENT/INSURANCE:
Payment
is due before the procedure. We accept credit cards (VISA,
American Express, Master Card, Discover) or money orders.
The credit card holder must be present to sign. We do NOT
accept personal checks. Your health insurance may also be
used if coverage is provided by your own plan. Our insurance
department is always happy to help you with your insurance
questions.
